Challenge

Massey & Harris was approached by Forma Landscapes, who were working with The Jockey Club and Newmarket Racecourse, to create a bespoke children’s play area for one of their flagship racecourses.

The brief was for an eye-catching and high-quality play area with a largely natural feel, using timber as the predominant material.

The client also wanted an exciting tall main play unit.

Solution

Massey & Harris used its knowledge of stainless steel fabrication with large timber elements to manufacture all of the play equipment within the scheme.

The centrepiece of the design was a large play structure with a climbing wall on one side and a steep scramble net up to the 2.4m platform. The platform would allow children access to the 3.6m level with a showcase 3.6m high double bend tunnel slide. A 2.4m trough slide was included on the unit to improve the flow of children on busy days.

A bespoke multi-level sand play climbing unit with three levels was designed and manufactured, allowing children to work together to move sand around the sandpit by using varying tools and play features. A 6m-long Everard timber rope swing was also manufactured for the site, providing additional group and social play opportunities for large numbers of children being able to sit on the swinging rope at one time.

The full site included:

  • A bespoke ‘Newmarket’ climbing unit with tunnel and trough slides
  • Three bespoke stainless steel crawl tunnels with in-ground lookout portals
  • A 6m Everard rope swing
  • Two 1.2m-wide embankment trough slides
  • A bespoke sand play unit

The area was landscaped and surfaced with high-quality, play grade bark and turfed to complement the natural feel to the play area.

Outcome

Since completion in April 2017, the playground has been used by families and children and received numerous positive compliments from both users and the end client.

The Jockey Club and Newmarket Racecourse were delighted with the bespoke nature of the equipment and the overall scheme, and committed to a second play area development at another site to open in April 2018.
