When global technology company ARM unveiled ambitious plans to more than double its headcount over the next five years, they wanted to ensure their headquarters expansion plans were in safe hands. They turned to Kier Group, a leading construction, property, residential and services group, who won the £48m contract to develop the Cambridge HQ and provide 18,000m2 of Grade A office space and two multi-storey car parks alongside existing buildings.
With a strong track record in delivering office space in the UK, Kier Group was acutely aware of the myriad challenges a 3000+ headcount presents.
At the design stage, Kier Group opted for metroSTOR, experts on outdoor storage systems, to provide the premium, modular bin storage already factored in to their project plans.
Terry Bedford, metroSTOR's Business Development Manager:
"Whatever the scale of a construction project, inescapable practical factors will always need to be considered and satisfactory resolution sought. Wherever people work or reside, the production of waste is inevitable and the management and disposal of that waste is a fundamental, but frequently overlooked, imperative. I have lost count of the number of times the impact of a build, even an iconic one, has been overshadowed by unsightly waste management lingering on the periphery. Sometimes this is the result of wilfully malicious activity but more often than not it is simply the result of half-measures where the repercussions of poor waste management have not been properly grasped at the planning stages. Sadly, the issue of effective waste disposal is not isolated to social or residential housing; possibly a consequence of stretched budgets. It is an epidemic that is just as rife in the commercial and private sector where barely contained waste continues to impact on the final scheme.
I was delighted when Kier Group, who clearly understand the negative impact poor waste management and disposal have on site functionality, sought metroSTOR’s expertise in supplying the modular bin storage featured in their design. They identified that the long-term credibility of the expansion would be undermined if provision of a simple but effective waste management system wasn’t adhered to. With our accrued experience, diverse product range and cost effective single-source approach, they considered our modular design offered the best value and was quick to install and modify. The superb, flexible design, smart appearance, tough construction, connectivity and future-proof adaptability made the delivery of the bin storage element of the project very simple for Kier Group.
On this project our smart and unobtrusive PBH wasteSTOR™ bin room units have allowed recycling waste centres to be strategically and sympathetically located in close proximity to the main office buildings. I was particularly pleased by the way our attractive but low-maintenance western red cedar horizontal cladding added an attractive but subtle flourish without compromising practicality. In addition to being modular, the units configurability for a combination of wheeled and stacking bin types within a single secure enclosure, presents a flexibility that can evolve with the needs of the business. With metroSTOR® design and production processes carried out in accordance with the industry’s highest standards, I am always confident our products will provide many years of trouble-free service wherever they are located."
