Granite paving, walling, kerbs, coping and steps
Hardscape provided a range of high-quality coloured granite for the hard landscaping at Stockport Exchange - the commercial business district of Stockport. This is a multi-million pound mixed-use destination, combining high-quality office space with retail and leisure facilities and car parking.
The project aimed to create:
- a new gateway and arrival space to Stockport from the station
- a new pedestrian boulevard linking the Exchange to the town centre
- a high-quality setting for the hotel and commercial office development
Hardscape supplied all the granite paving, walling, kerbs, coping and steps, which amounted to 9500 square metres in total. The walling, steps, copings and kerbs were all Royal Grey granite. The granite sett mix was specifically chosen to provide a warm rich texture that is sympathetic to the vernacular red brick in the area whilst also complementing the modern commercial buildings. Hardscape assisted in the choice of colours which included a specific mix of Barleycorn (22.5%), Magma (22.5%), Cloudy Violet (22.5%), Cotton Rose (22.5%) and a final addition of Darton Brown (10%). Crystal Black and Royal Grey granite setts were also used for separate walkways.
All the stone walls and terraces were bespoke to ensure a simple, elegant finish to the scheme and to articulate the large-level changes in an effortless and seamless way.
A previously cluttered, uninviting streetscape that was mainly vehicle dominated, was transformed into an attractive public space with pedestrian walkways and places where people could sit and relax.
