Leicester Tigers has become the first UK rugby club to install a County Turf grown Eclipse Stabilised Natural Turf pitch at its Welford Road ground, with great results.

Lincolnshire-based turf grower County Turf secured the UK and European license for Motz Eclipse Stabilised Natural Turf and have already installed Eclipse Turf at The Grove Hotel and at the Brentford FC ground with excellent results. In fact it was a visit to Brentford which convinced the Leicester club that Eclipse was the way to go for the Tigers.

Eclipse Hybrid Turf is a patented combination of natural grass growing in a unique stabilising mat.  The combination produces a natural turf solution that delivers the manageability, playability and flexibility demanded by today’s world-class sporting venues.

This hybrid turf combines natural and synthetic fibres tufted into an open-weave backing, top dressed with specified sand. The reinforcement of the artificial grass guarantees stability and an even playing surface immediately after installation.

County Turf Director, Chris Medley said: "We have been working with the team at Leicester Tigers for over a year now. We carried out trials last winter which went extremely well and we harvested and laid the 720 rolls of turf for the new pitch at Welford Rd in just 4 days in August 2016. Before Eclipse, there wasn't the option to install a reinforced pitch in a short timescale. It also provides the reliability and manageability of a reinforced stitched pitch, yet is a fraction of the price.

Eclipse pitches offer a 100% natural grass playing surface which meets all the governing body regulations and is maintained in exactly the same way as a traditional turf surface. The stabilised matting means that the pitch has dramatically increased wear tolerance with a decreased incidence of divoting and ‘in-play’ damage.

Once installed, Eclipse Turf is instantly stable and ready for play. It could be the ideal turf solution for many sporting venues in the UK.

Leicester Tigers confirmed that they were delighted with the installation of the new pitch and the service provided by County Turf, both in the planning of the project and in the follow up support offered: "County Turf has done a fantastic job in the planning, growing, cutting and delivery of the pitch. We are working closely with County Turf and are in touch daily with ongoing fortnightly visits."
