Challenge

Having seen previous installations of large oak Adventure Cubes, Jane’s Pond approached Massey & Harris with an idea to create a vertical playground within a very tight space at a school in Soho, London.

After some very challenging issues with the site location and size, a final design was approved by the school and structural engineers using larch glulam timber Adventure Cubes.

This significant installation overcame various difficulties. As well as the central London location, the fact there were vaulted chambers below the school playground made installation and structural calculations difficult. The proposed height of the finished structure was challenging to install, while there was a tight timescale in order to complete the installation for the end of the summer holidays.

Adventure Cubes

The 180mm section glulam cubes were manufactured with galvanised steel corner brackets, over 2000 stainless steel fixings, stainless steel internal frames for the decks and laser cut half-round sections to fit and tension the many rope nets and scramble nest that allowed the school children to make their way safely from ground level up to the top decks 5.5m above street level.

A trap door allows access to a large timber deck at the very top of the structure and large 22mm thick panes of glass glazed into the top cubes create a fantastic additional space for the school to use as an outdoor classroom, social area and play area extension. Additional steps designed and installed by Jane’s Pond allow access from the rear to the same sun deck.

Outcome

Jane’s Pond completed the transformation of the rest of the playground and the school has a new playground that is architecturally striking, has huge play value and physical challenges, along with the multi-purpose top deck for all of the children and teachers to enjoy.
