The world of turf harvesting has gone hi-tech with the installation of iPads into all harvesters and forklifts at Tillers Turf.

The system has been developed in-house to simplify the management of daily orders which often requires the cutting of 14 different types of turf loaded onto 25 different lorries.

Previously, the Harvest Manager was given a paper schedule at the start of the day, but this quickly became out-of-date as new orders came into the office via phone and email. Now, all orders go directly to the iPads in the harvesters where operators will select which one to cut according to work load and field position. Office staff can check on the status of any order by looking at their screen.

Harvest Manager, Ian Spray, says: “This technology has made my job a whole lot easier because I can keep tabs on exactly what the harvesters are doing and when orders will be ready for collection”.

The innovation speeds up the harvesting operation, reduces the chance of errors occurring and keeps customers fully informed of when and where turf can be collected. Moving to a paperless system has eliminated the time consuming task of updating written instructions throughout the day.
