The UK’s ageing population means that the demand to build more rest homes presents opportunities for landscape architects and landscape designers, according to Horticulture Week. As an example, Care UK, one of the UK’s bigger rest home companies, has just opened five new properties in as many weeks and plans a further 30 more over the next nine years.

Because rest homes and nursing homes need to be tranquil, aesthetically pleasing environments, landscape is crucial to the design of all properties, which boast impressive gardens, according to Care UK spokesperson, Sheila Roberts. Residents can find big spaces intimidating, so designs must reflect a more intimate, domestic setting and include trellises, sheds and gazebos to break up the space. Residents tend to find walking comforting, so paths blend into the designs.

Kinley Systems landscape products are used by landscape architects and landscape designers extensively to make such gardens beautiful, functional, innovative and long lasting. Our Raaft Terrafina range of wood polymer non-slip composite decking provides very safe walkways for the elderly and our Perimeta range of planters provides greenery and break-up open spaces very effectively. For easy to install edging along paths and driveways, our ExcelEdge range of landscape edging provides a solution for every style of garden, with the AluExcel aluminium edging range being lightweight and durable. More stable gravel pathways can be achieved using Gravelrings gravel stabilisation panels, which stop gravel shifting and create an even covered pathway.

According to Age UK, for the first time in the UK’s history, there are over 11 million people aged over 65 and there are more people aged 60 than are under 18. So the demand for new rest homes, nursing homes and indeed suitable landscape designs is clearly on the increase. Co-author of NHS guide Greenspace Design for Health and Well-being, Aileen Shackell commented; “A lot of what’s designed for that user group is tokenistic – driven too much by maintenance requirements and how spaces look rather than on how usable they are”. Kinley Systems’ products are designed with usage in mind and certainly geared towards low maintenance. Gravelrings remove the need to tend gravel pathways. Raaft Terrafina composite decking requires next to no maintenance when compared to wooden decking, and one of the fundamental purposes of ExcelEdge landscape edging is to maintain edges for years to come.
