Cobblestone Designs were approached by Camille Archer, West Lothian Council Arts Development Officer who was in the process of commissioning a piece of art for Livingston's busy Almondvale shopping centre.
Land Securities Group were developing a retail site at the shopping centre on behalf of clothing company Primark, and as part of West Lothian Council's arts policy this involved contributing a piece of artwork to the town. Funds provided were used to develop a large mosaic in conjunction with a community group involved in river conservation.
Camille Archer recommended Cobblestone Designs who were asked to interpret ‘The Rolling River’ theme that was outlined in the brief. Maggy Howarth of Cobblestone Designs made different designs and then consulted with the conservation group.
The final design included a large mosaic area with wildlife studies in the corners, which refer to the town’s active role in conservation. The centre portion of the design was left relatively plain in order to meet a fixed budget.
