Challenge

New building development and enhancement work at Hereford College in Grimsby required the closure of the main college car park.

Because of limited on-site space, the college had to make use of their existing grassed areas for parking.

This presented the problem of surface damage, wear and rutting, which would make it unsightly and would need a great deal of remedial work in the future.

Solution

Following on-site consultation, Fiberweb Geosynthetics recommended GrassProtecta® (Heavy) to solve the problems that the college faced, and was commissioned to install the system and provide a sound finish.

The company carried out the initial filling of small depressions in the surface and the repair of worn areas with a soil/seed mix to encourage growth.

Then the GrassProtecta® system was installed to exacting standards.

  • Structure: Oscillated Polymer HDPE (80% virgin, 20% recycled) 
  • Colour: Green 
  • UV Stabilised: Yes

  • Weight per square metre: 2kg/m2
  • Thickness: 14mm
  • Mesh aperture (diamond:oval): 3:1 ratio

  • Tensile strength (MD) (ISO 10319): 16kN/m
  • Yield point elongation (MD) (ISO 10319): 35%
  • Residual thickness @ 500kPa (ASTM D1621): 60%
  • Slip-risk PTV value (BS 7976-1-3): >40 (low slip)

Outcome

After regular watering, the existing grass sward and the newly sown seed areas quickly established through the mesh, creating a natural, strongly intertwined surface, ready for the college to use for parking.

The college was impressed with the speed and quality of the installation, and with the product itself.

The area was used throughout the period of the building enhancement work. After its completion, the discreet grassed parking surface continued to be used as additional overflow car parking, still without any rutting or damage to the surface.
