Play train and associated themed equipment
Urmston & District Model Engineering Society operates a miniature railway at Abbotsfield Park in Flixton in the Borough of Trafford.
The railway comprises a continuous circuit of 2200 feet (670 metres) of raised track, comprising both 3½” and 5″ gauges. It is one of the largest elevated tracks in the country.
Founded in 1948, the Society promotes and encourages model engineering of all kinds, and aims to bring together people interested in the hobby.
In 2012, the toddler play area at the park needed to be remodelled, but due to tight budgets a complete renewal of the park was not possible.
A bespoke play train with friendly lion, a ticket booth, an embankment slide with tunnel entrance and an industrial steel bridge were all requested. In addition, a steel tunnel and trough were refurbished to provide ground level play tunnels with new entrance panels.
The ticket booth welcomes the children to the play area.
After a few design changes, the Engine, Tender and two carriages were completed and installed on the wet pour rubber track with station platform. The centre of the area was landscaped. The bridge spans the two main mounds and leads to the 1.2m high embankment slide.
The stainless tunnel and trough was refurbished and now worked well in the area, with their stone effect entrances.
The new equipment fits in well with the miniature railway in the park, and enables children to continue the fun in the play area after having a ride on the scale steam engines.
With budgets being tight, refurbishing the existing equipment was a prefereable option to new play equipment, and Massey & Harris' expertise has saved the Society money.
Overall the redevelopment has given the park a real lift.
