As part of their ‘Plan A’ strategy, Marks & Spencer opened its most eco-friendly store to date at Eccleshall Road, Sheffield. The new 12,400 square foot Simply Food store is designed to reduce its environmental impact in both its construction and operation. The store was built on a brownfield site, rather than renovating an existing store to make the most of recovered materials. Any waste created in the stores production was recycled or reused.
M&S sought an environmentally friendly solution to protect the perimeter of the store. Furnitubes was able to provide an eco-friendly solution that could also act as an anti-ram raid component. Furnitubes supplied their unique mesh (gabion) bollards to the site.
The bollards feature a galvanised mild steel mesh frame and steel band (for reflective tape) and a heavy duty galvanised steel security inner core. The gap between the outer mesh and the steel inner core was filled with locally sourced stones.
The bollards have a 200mm diameter and were installed 1000mm above ground to comply with BS 8300:2009 British Standard regulations regarding height and visibility to meet the needs of disabled people.
The bollards at the M&S Eco store have achieved the three R's of the environment:
- Reduce – the bollards are filled with materials on site, reducing transporting costs
- Re-use – the mesh bollards can be filled with re-used stones, aggregate or other reclaimed materials, helping to reduce the use of landfill
- Recycle – Furnitubes steel, used for the construction of the mesh, is 100% recyclable
The end result is a range of attractive, modern bollards that are in keeping with the environmental ethos of the store whilst providing security and protection against ram-raiding.
There are plans to use the bollards at other M&S Eco Stores.
